ZIKA PREVENTION WITH MOSQUITO FISH

The world's number one natural mosquito prevention and disease prevention by mosquito transfer has been the mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis). Starting in the 1920's this fish was credited for stopping malaria outbreak's in Russia and South America. Today all Government levels still distribute live mosquito fish into drainage ditches, small ponds, and aquatic features as a natural mosquito prevention mechanism.

The adult mosquito fish can consume hundreds of mosquito larvae per day even up to 167% of its own body weight. The adult females will produce 60 off spring every 19 days in warm water. During the summer breeding season one female can produce a few thousand new off spring. This rate of reproduction and its appetite for mosquito larvae is the reasons this fish can, in a natural way, make a big impact on controlling mosquito populations.

Zika is just one of many known diseases that are transferred by mosquitoes. The human population must do everything it can to try and stop the spread of these diseases and mosquito fish have been an important asset for over 100 years in helping to limit mosquitoes. If you have a garden pond, water feature, standing water in ditches, farm ponds or any large vessel that can hold rain water, mosquito fish can help control the spread of these diseases.

Live mosquito fish can be delivered right to your door safe and sound. We use FedEx door to door delivery. See the listing for live mosquito fish below and the costs. FedEx delivery costs are determined by staff on a case by case basis which is determined by your Zip code.

Ocean Green (Trade Name for live marine phytoplankton) is an excellent and nutritious food for all filter feeders including bivalves, corals, gorgonia, sponges, scallops, brine shrimp, rotifers, hydrozoans, anemones, tube worms, and many others. Each quart of Ocean Green contains over one billion tiny live one cell marine plants (2-5 micron size). They are raised in the laboratory under closely controlled conditions and are free of any fish diseases and other unwanted contaminants, so they may be used safely in all marine aquaria. Fish and invertebrates alike require the presence of live plants in their environment in order to remain colorful, active and healthy. Ocean Green provides natural nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Ocean Green contains: protein (60%), carbohydrates (20%), fats (3%), natural pH buffers, iodine, natural B vitamins, and trace elements.  The recommended feeding is one pint per two days per 50 gallon reef-type aquarium.  For reef aquariums heavily stocked with filter feeders, more may be needed.  Please note that Nannochloropsis is cultured in 15 0/00 seawater. Heavy use will dilute your aquarium water so check regularly.

Beta - Meal

All natural unicellular marine algae (D. salina) that has been farm raised and then dried at low temperature to maintain the maximum nutritional values possible.  One gram of Beta-Meal represents the equivalent of at least 100 gallons of live algae culture (at least 10 billion algae cells) and contains 2% Beta-carotene.  Beta-Meal is the natural diet for many marine organisms that filter water for their dietary needs, including rotifers to corals to clams.  Because Beta-Meal is pure algae, it is totally non-polluting to your aquarium or holding system.

The amount of Beta-Meal used will depend on the size of the reef aquarium and the number of filter feeders in the aquarium.  For the average 50 gallon reef aquarium, use 1/8 level teaspoon every day or two. Simply put the Beta-Meal in one or two cups of tank water, stir until totally dissolved and pour in.  It is recommended that any particle filters be turned off for at least one hour while creatures are feeding.
